chicken or egg?

we know my favorite subject is “the wide range of ways in which amelia is/has ever been pre-peak.” I live for early trend adoption.

mules, crop tops, body chains, overalls, garden clogs— basically all the semi-weird shit I wear to the dismay of my fellow restaurant, gas station, Target, doctor’s office-goers— at least 3-4 months ahead of it hitting Main Street.

someone told me recently that nearly every item in my wardrobe is impractical and I wanted to kiss him square in the mouth. innately impractical in a world that beats you senseless with the merits of logic— a highest honor!

returning to my pre-peakness, I busted out a favorite wtf look for girls dinner this past weekend– everyone’s favorite (just mine) Irish lace nightgown! **crickets crickets**

after being mocked mercilessly in the fall by my sister and a man who clearly didn’t understand fashion (a whole diff man from the one above), I broke out my precious nightie in January and paired it with all black leather and a slicked back bun. I looked like an 18th century rocker chick— obsessed!

fast forward to may and I deemed it perfect for mid-spring, early summer! this time, I swapped the leather for oversized, vintage denim and years-old tan suede platforms so tall I’m forced to drive barefoot. obvi, this reference. as I put the final touches on my look and spritzed a little hairspray in my tousled waves, I had a eureka moment— “I AM 100000% Chloé f/w 2024…or wait, were they Amelia Thompson s/s 2023 in Dublin?” this was bigger than who wore it better? this was who did it first? a groundbreaking topic in fashion!

clearly I give alllllll reverence to high fashion and the designers who work tirelessly to take collections from ideation to sketch to sample to manufacture to RTW to actual sales, but it got me thinking— who are their references? well, obviously, it’s the average woman in cities across the globe pulling together a collection of **impractical** pieces deemed worthy enough to make each day just a bit more enjoyable.

when I bought my Irish lace nightie from a random giftshop in a random castle in Dublin last August, I wasn’t thinking “damn, I can’t wait for boho-chic to come back in 6 months!” no, I was actually thinking, “damn, this will be so irreverent with a leather jacket for a Memphis dinner date! everyone will be so annoyed I’m wearing pjs out…again!” to be honest, I was referencing the Prada s/s 2023 moment, but clearly was better equipped to buy this 60-pound version at Russborough Castle than Miuccia’s $2k style.

other bohemian meets leather/lace looks I’m absolutely loving:

  1. Courtney Grow, a growing fave, in perfectly casual white lace+ sporty bomber.
  2. Leandra putting the repel in man repeller as she is known to do— love the whisper of bedtime with a very good oversized knit, and eye spy a Daphine ring!
  3. why not lounge a la Vittoria in an Eiffel Tower-facing suite in lace, cashmere and Sambas? via british vogue june 2023
  4. not standard boho, but Amal Clooney & her husband George is always a reference. forever and ever, amen!
  5. more Irish nightie action— this time in an actual bed…
  6. I am still recovering from Sienna at the met 2024. her it-girl status is both awe-inspiring and confounding, because how does she do it? the nonchalance with which she attended and won all met gala events should be studied by our top academic minds! via telegraph uk
  7. this image from an Elle magazine spread ca. spring 2023 continues to inform how I combine textures, genres and shades.
  8. Sienna again, ladies and gents! this is the mother version of what I did for Saturday girls’ dinner seen above. the proportions and sheen of the leather alone are enough to make a person scream— perfection! via W magazine
  9. this collab between queen B and Edie Parker x St. John is beyond. the sweet white lace juxtaposed against naughty red lipstick and a bag for the good-ish girl who smokes is spot-on.
  10. I shared this image last spring via posse and simply adore the messy hair with the delicate silk/lace, and who can resist a rosé double-fist?
  11. that front row of Chloé platforms is a tidal wave of chic– long live the fashion show! via elle.com
  12. the sweet Prada look that inspired my Russborough purchase. no notes!

the lesson— because you know I live for the lesson— trust your instincts, buy what you want when you want and wear it with unhinged confidence. Xx

to quote pop queen charli xcx,
“I went my own way and I made it. I’m your favorite reference, baby.”
