Happy almost everything, but happiest that it’s almost a new year. 2024 has been a doozy, but I am taking the high road and focusing on the good parts. I also don’t believe that everything transforms to roses and sunshine when the clock strikes midnight on Jan 1, but we all deserve a moment of freshness. So, racing towards the end of this blasted year, let’s talk faves.
This list is in no particular order, has no rhyme or reason, but was so fun to write!
- Favorite Outfit— The Venn diagram of “my sister’s least favorite outfit” is incredibly high in this category. I have only worn my lace pants twice because having your bare ass out at a nice restaurant only works in a city with more than 8M residents. The Dover in Mayfair was the perfect second location for my lace britches, an ex’s sweater, vintage leather, a lady bag and my tried-true Prada mule sandals. tl;dr: I just felt really fucking cool.
- Favorite Dinner— I am a lucky girl who has at least 1-2 fabulous dinners per month, so this is a crowded category. However, there is a clear standout from very early in the year– a really sweet and romantic dinner date at a favorite local spot where all I had to do was wear a killer outfit, let someone else order for me and hold hands under the bar. Yea, let’s do those again.
- Favorite Restaurant— Joe Beef in Montreal is top of the list. There is a weekly daydream about that table-side beef tartare and the jolliest, sweetest server on earth.
- Favorite Trip— London x Birthday. I am still in shock at the 6+ hours we spent at Chiltern Firehoue on my birthday. There were cosmos, triple vodkas, so.many.cigarettes., annoying Gen-Z Brits, Jerry Bruckheimer and an emergency pizza. Capital, baby!
- Favorite City— Gotcha! If you assumed it was going to be London, you are incorrect. NYC saved me so many times this year, I could literally cry writing this. I had a year that took me to my edge, and New York brought me back every single time. I spent 10 days in August ensconced in the city, and still don’t have the words to express my gratitude for those moments. My most recent December trip confirmed what has been in my bones for years- I’m ready for Part II. Universe, you’re up.
- Favorite Beauty Find— Gosh, how influencer/planet destroying of me, but I am obsessed with these Amazon eye masks. I pop them in whatever fridge I have access to and wear in the ams, before nights out and sometimes during a full REM cycle.
- Favorite Workout— I’ve been spinning like a crazy person all year. And I have also been doing a lot of indoor cycling. Lollll, but also true. Lara Scott at Cyclebar Memphis is my tHerAPy (I’m also in actual therapy obvi), and I occasionally drag my ass to a 7am SoulCycle with Maddie in Uptown Dallas. My most recent stint involved a very still-hot Troy Aikman in the back row. Honorable mention- I’m running again!
- Favorite Vintage— Tough one, but my perfect condition granny-chic Chanel pumps, purchased on my birthday at Loops Generation in Chelsea are the obvious answer.
- Favorite Designer Buy— Documented here, but my little Chanel ladybugs (yes, I recognize how annoying this CC habit has become/has been, but alas). Marching straight into BG’s to find EXACTLY what I want is a top 5 moment of a year that maybe only had 5 moments.
- Favorite Non Designer Buy— My Canal St x canary yellow Goyard tote. It was a scene straight out of a Seinfeld/SATC mashup, but I lived to tell the tale. This bag gets so many compliments with its raveling straps and strings everywhere, but I love it! And I love telling people “it’s totally fake,” because while I’m insane, I’m not like $3k for coated canvas crazy.
- Favorite Lunch— Miznon in Dallas, Midtown East and Chelsea Market. It’s criminal how quickly I devour that minute steak pita. It is a moment straight out of 2014 NYC- crouched under scaffolding, inhaling Rainbow Falafel at 5th Ave/17th St before a Drybar appointment.
- Favorite Manicure— a hotrod, red mani- gel or otherwise! QQ Nails or Above the Pigment in NYC, and my beloved Spa Nails in Memphis are my go-to’s.
- Favorite Book (Fiction)— 3-way tie: Commonwealth by Ann Patchett (listened halfway on audio and some passages stopped me in my tracks), None Of This Is True by Lisa Jewell (holy WTF plot twists!) and Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (as good as they say, if not better!)
- Favorite Book (Non-fiction)— Letting Go by David Hawkins. It is heady and a bit kooky towards the end, but it came at a time when I really, really needed to fucking let go.
- Favorite Audiobook— The only person who loves The Firm more than me and my sister is John Grisham himself. I started the audiobook on a Nashville drive, and nearly drove clean into the Tennessee River. It is the original action story!
- Favorite Habit— Sober curiosity. I took a break from drinking March through…today, and it has really kept me level. There’s been a lot of homemade iced tea, a ton of sleepy girl mocktails, cases of sparking water, and the standout– Ghia soda in the lime & salt flavor. Honorable mention, two-a-day workouts. I’ll balance something high intensity (running, spinning, weight lifting, hot yoga) with a more low-fi workout (long walk, at-home or reformer Pilates) and sleep like a baby.
- Favorite Show— I had to take a break from dating mid-fall, so I just watched tv instead. I have loved Industry since the first season- even before my inaugural trip to beloved London. So you can imagine that after the most perfect Season 3, I am rabid for those Pierpoint Psychpaths. It is the best portrayal of three-dimensional, completely unhinged female characters currently on the screen. So, babes- are you a Yasmin, a Harper or a Sweetpea?
- Favorite A-Ha— The election gave me an abundance of mental clarity around who/what matters the most to me. At the present moment, it’s a very small group of family/friends who I know without a shadow of a doubt care about anything other than their most base survival. I refuse to let anyone take away my human right to live and find joy every day.
- Favorite Boundary— If you thought I wasn’t people pleasing in 2023, hunny, watch out because I have taken it to another level. I am laser-focused on making sure Mimi is good to go first, and then trusting that all else will fall into place from there. Another one, blocking people- enough said.
- Favorite Coffee— This is about to get very irritating, but let’s do this by city. London- Fortitude Coffee (Sorry, Gail’s) for an iced latte with a real straw, NYC- Sant Ambroeus for the iced soy matcha, Montreal- Le Cartet for the iced matcha with homemade date syrup, Memphis- I was the lucky recipient of some very very good home lattes for a bit, but it will always and forever be the iced vanilla latte at Hustle & Dough, Nashville- 8th & Roast for anything over ice.
- Favorite Cocktail— I just keep ordering Cosmopolitans and also keep not giving a fuck what anyone thinks about it. The best Cosmo so far was at The Dover, scene of aforementioned lace pants. I dared to declare my vodka preference (Ketel One), only to have our handsome waiter metaphorically slap my hand and scold, “Well, then it’s not a Cosmopolitan.” A bossy Italian in London- swoon!
- Favorite Hotel— shock of all shocks, the hotel that knocked my socks off was Mountain Shadows in Paradise Valley, AZ. Yes, I said ARIZONA. It was this expansive jewel of a property that really calmed my early November/more 2024 fresh hell/post-election storms. A stunning pool-facing room, complimentary Pilates and a Caesar salad wrap that I reminisce on a lot. Mimi goes West?
- Favorite Scent— Windsor from Dr. Harris in Mayfair. The girls and I came in like a storm and bought half the store- the shopgirls were very Daphine ca. Summer 2023 aka SHOOK!
- Fave Blog/Substack— No one on the World Wide Web is funnier than Hunter Harris. The way she has single-handedly held Taylor Swift’s abysmal rotation of pap looks to the fire is an act of pure heroism.
Ok, my Christmas wish is for you to pick a few of these categories and share some of your favorite things. Happy happy New Year, my darlings. Xx
