I have been in a low-grade grief fever over the demise of my beloved Intermix for about 18 months. To see my home IM in the Meatpacking District, morph into a Golden Goose store is just too much to bear. So many of my most cherished NYC memories involve shopping at Intermix or wearing a piece procured from there.
Shopbop has bravely stepped in to fill this massive retail void for me. I will forever be an Intermix Girl, but you gotta know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em!
I recently had a chat with one of my retail besties about the current state of the business— chaotic, nutty, and yet again on the brink of an utter meltdown— and how different retailers have fared the latest storm. At a glance: Saks and Neiman’s are sell-out Amazon shells; smaller, family-owned department stores like Dillard’s, Mitchell’s and Saint Bernard’s are holding strong; and Shopbop doing what IM should have done a decade ago- ditch GAP for a retail partner with real cash aka Amazon/Wal-Mart, have a non-NYC-based HQ and get rid of the brick/mortar overhead. I know it’s been a while since I was in the Buyer seat, but retail holds a mighty grip. It is one of the most fascinating industries in the world, and traditional media is finally recognizing how consumers’ retail habits predict everything else by investing in retail reporting.
In the internet influencer world, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale became laughably basic— like every single person with a keyboard giving their picks for weeks on end. I say that (kind of) not to judge, but more in recognition of the absurdity of these sale roundups.
The Shopbop Sale is less about bulk buying across so many random categories (from the NAS sale— my fave designer deodorant, lipstick and $800 sandal! Wut?!) and much more about giving your wardrobe a little electric shock for the season.
In honor of Shopbop and their incredible merchant team, I am jumping in the sale roundup fray!
- Tory’s mesh flats have turned me into a Tory mesh flats person. That chunky silver detail is a clear indicator that TB knows exactly what the f she’s doing so many years later. I love the ultra-feminine styling here, but would also love to see it roughed up with some athletics shorts, a tank and an oversized jacket.
- I have been lusting over this Lioness denim halter top for a full year. It sadly reminds me of a backless denim halter via the GAP that was a staple piece in high school. During a move from here, there and everywhere it disappeared. I’m currently on a shopping hold, but may just pull the trigger in a few weeks. I would style it over a lighter-shade denim mini or some warm-weather leather.
- So, just hear me out— I know that I have featured THREE Staud bags here, but as a proud Staud Ambassador, they all have a reason to be. The mesh series is absurdly good, and I can’t decide if the giant green gingham or mini tie-dye swirl is my fave, but I have decided I kinda need them both. These would be my nonstop spring/summer bags because they radiate 80 degrees and over. And what more can I say about the Tommy bag?! This Tommy Girl is the Chloe Sevigny of bags under $500– eternally cool, so versatile and elicits a knowing wink from fellow followers. Oh shit, I actually have two Tommys on here for a whopping total of four Staud bags. Retail math!
- Cutest little Rachel Comey heart earrings at a great price! Go full Cupid and pair with an all-red and/or pink look.
- I think I reference Norma Kamali almost as much as Chanel and Juicy Couture, which, what a fashion trio that is! NK completely understands how to dress a cool woman and like Tory, she has always been on top of her game. The sleeves on this bodysuit alone can make an entire outfit. This is the piece when you need to show someone who’s boss, but also a hottie who doesn’t give a fuck. I would tuck this into any bottom and pair with my YSL velvet mules and just hit the town!
- Similar to the denim halter, I’ve been eyeing this Lioness faux leather bomber for a while. It is kind of a rip off of the Bottega woven-leather look, but I think it holds up. Love it styled as is, leaning into the boyish angle but with very good hair and a hot-girl hoop. I would personally swap the sneaker for a heel, but we knew that.
- We know how much I adore a simple thong sandal! It’s the 00’s in me, and this square-toe version by my beloved Tkees is hitting all the right notes. Their sandals last forever, but if that $75 price tag for a humble flip is not sitting well with you, try the Haviana’s classic rubber version. I have many pairs by both brands!
- The pink chore coat is a little overpriced but I’m confident would be like my Armie’s leather jacket and provide foundational support for my entire wardrobe. The shade of pink is absolutely spot-on and is giving me Shelby’s “blush and bashful” in spades. I would pair it with some of my girly miniskirts to rough things up a bit or with trad black trousers for a little business casual fun. How great paired with my tweed Chanels and a high ponytail?
- This acid-yellow cardigan is a bit of a plot twist from my usual style, but I welcome it! It’s “fine” styled simply as pictured with jeans and a tee, but I would buy it at least two sizes too big and wear nearly unbuttoned over nothing but a miniskirt— something vintage from a showy Italian designer brand— and stilettos. It would also work well over culottes with a splash of Daphine necklaces and a flat sandal.
I am also linking to my Shopbop hearts 💕 so you can see all the other goodies on my radar! I like to keep the sold-outs as a reminder of the pieces that were inspiring me in the moment. Kk, that’s all— the code is STYLE through 4/11. Shop Bop and Be Merry! Xx
