It was Dec of 2024, and Matthieu Blazy was announced as the new Creative Director of Chanel. He, of so much woven and wildly commercial Bottega success, would be leading one of the most iconic legacy brands in fashion. The initial response was mixed— some people salivated at the opportunity for an accessories master to elevate Chanel to another level. Others couldn’t connect the dots. Chanel is…Chanel. Who could do it justice? Addie and I were having a conversation on the subject and I stood firmly in my stance that Blazy’s influence on Chanel’s bread & butter categories— handbags and shoes— would reverberate for generations. As my Spidey senses are known to predict, I was spot-on!
From the first moment of his debut show last fall, it was clear Matthieu would be blowing the lid off of the old POV. He squared off the iconic two-tone pump and added boyish details to the ladylike look of the ready-to-wear categories. The world was captivated, and little did we know, he was just getting started.
The Metier show, staged in a defunct NYC subway station, brought Chanel to the streets and dare I say, to the people. (A stretch!) I couldn’t get over each look, and honestly was so overwhelmed by the show that I found it difficult to find my words. It was as if the past four years of my evolving love for Chanel had exploded and found a home in the modern woman. I was that New York City girl, navigating the city (Uber, not train) in my denim, fabulous third piece and irreplaceable Chanel shoes. Finally, it didn’t feel crazy to talk about my slingbacks and pumps with every breath. Do I Say Chanel in Every Post? Proudly!
Well, imagine my shock and awe when I watched the Couture show this week and was cocooned in stunning swaths of ethereal mousseline, silk and lace. Pants and tops in transparent layers mimicking tweed, but moving like a breath of fresh air. Two-tone pumps making me genuinely concerned that my current collection of Chanel footwear will look decidedly pre-Blazy upon my next wear. The airy remake of the Chanel flap bag legitimately brought me to my knees as it bounced down the runway, begging the viewer to recalibrate all we’ve ever known about one of the most classic bag shapes in history. What is even happening? I asked myself. As I predicted to Addie, Blazy has taken Chanel and applied his Bottega blueprint to shape the brand into something that is heart-achingly beautiful and modern. You remember exactly where you were when you encountered the BV Cassette bag for the first time or that iconic square-soled mule sandal. Yes, they are wildly popular and often-duped, but like anything very very good, you know it when you see it.
He is creating that very moment with one of the oldest houses in high fashion.
Please remember that I just wrote about the number of sheer bottoms I have worn in the past 30 days alone. Therefore, to see one model after another display the look that has been in my rotation for the past year was beyond gratifying. I followed my fashion instincts all the way to the most important creative director of our current time leading with the same vision. Not to be simultaneously woo-woo and totally narcissistic, I was equally in awe of Matthieu’s showmanship and proud of myself for always seeing things well before they come into plain view. Watch out, baby, I will be sheer from the waist down for the foreseeable future!
My favorite Blazy’s Chanel looks since Oct 2025:
I am ravenous for more Blazy! And for that sheer flap bag! Vive Chanel pour toujours! Xx
